Deadline approaching for Allred scholarship

Brett and Zell Allred lost their son, Marine Lance Corporal Michael J. Allred, when he was killed in a suicide bombing in Fallujah, Iraq, Sept. 6, 2004. In 2006 they created a scholarship foundation in Michael’s memory to thank those in their community of Hyde Park and throughout Cache Valley. “We select our award recipients from high school students from the valley who will be attending Utah State University. Also, we extend it to people who are currently attending USU, primarily in undergraduate studies. We’re not restricted to any degree but anyone who wants to apply can go to our website and do that.” The Allreds have generated money for the scholarships through fundraisers. “The main one we’re focusing on right now is a motorcycle run called ‘Ride for the Fallen’ which will take place August 27 of this year and that is the primary source for funds for the scholarship.” Allred said about 70 volunteers helped stage last year’s event. “We are grateful for the support of family and extended family and a lot of friends and neighbors who have become aware and want to volunteer. It’s a nice event, it takes many to help out and make it work.” Allred said donations can be made at a link on the foundation website, www.mjallredscholarship.org. He said for students interested in applying for the scholarship, the same website includes scholarship forms, the applications, the address for mailing and what is required to apply. Deadline for scholarship applications is March 1.
