Utah State’s Sonia Grabowska Named WAC Women’s Track and Field Athlete Of The Week

LOGAN, Utah – Utah State junior pole vaulter Sonia Grabowska was tabbed as the Verizon Western Athletic Conference Women’s Indoor Track and Field Athlete of the Week, for the week of Jan. 17-23, announced Tuesday by the conference office. Grabowska, a native from Warsaw, Poland (VIII Lo Wtdaystaw IV), cleared a season-high 13 feet, 3.75 inches (4.06m) at the Cougar Invitational in Pullman, Wash. on Jan. 22, to win the pole vault title. With this jump, she claimed the best vault in the WAC this season, which is more than eight inches better than the second-best vault in the conference so far. Prior to the season, Grabowska was named to the USTFCCCA Division I Preseason Top 50 rankings in the pole vault. Louisiana Tech’s Chelsea Hayes was the track winner for her performance at the Arkansas State Invitational in which she claimed titles in the 55-meter dash, 200-meter dash and the long jump. Grabowska and the Utah State men and women’s track and field teams will continue their season on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 28-29, at Boise, Idaho in the Bronco Invitational, hosted by Boise State at the Jacksons Indoor Track at the Idaho Center. It will also serve as a preview for the WAC Indoor Championships, which will also be held at the Jacksons Indoor Track at the Idaho Center later in the year. -USU-
