Mormon church officials talking with Chinese

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The Mormon church says it is in talks with the People’s Republic of China to improve relations for church members living in mainland China.The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints says in a statement that the discussions are aimed at ensuring Mormons are practicing their faith within the boundaries of Chinese law.Church officials say the discussions were initiated by a Chinese government official.Meetings were held in Beijing in February and May and on Aug. 24 in Salt Lake City.Church spokesman Mike Otterson says no U.S. government officials have been involved in the discussions.Otterson says the talks do not include any discussions related to allowed church missionaries to engage in proselytizing.
