GOP delegates to vote on local, state and federal races

Delegates to Friday evening’s Cache County Republican Party Convention will be hearing from candidates for local, state and national office and they will also be voting on two different intra-party races. Cache GOP Chairman David James says the convention starts at 6 p.m. at the Mount Logan Middle School and a lot of the candidates will be there earlier trying to drum up support. James says there is a chance two candidates will be eliminated this evening. One contested race is between District 5 State Representative Curt Webb and his challenger Chuck Bateman. The other race is between incumbent Cache County Recorder Michael Gleed and his opponent Stanly Palmer. James says anytime a race crosses county boundaries it winds up going to the state convention. “So Legislative District 2,” James explains, “which is currently being represented by Ben Ferry, he covers both Cache County and Box Elder County, so as a result that will be dealt with at the state convention. “Then Legislative District 4, which is parts of Logan City and then over into Rich County that will be decided at the state convention as well.” Lee Perry is challenging incumbent Ben Ferry in District 2. Candidates for District 4 are Theresa Theurer and David Butterfield who are trying to replace outgoing Representative Fred Hunsaker. A candidate must get 70 percent of the vote in order to eliminate a primary. James says he expects local candidates with no competition will be approved by acclamation. “Beyond that, every race that I am aware of is contested from there on up,” James says. “Congressman Bishop has someone else running against him. Obviously, (for) the Senate race there are eight candidates. I believe there are four candidates for the governor’s race.” The convention starts at 6 p.m. at the Mount Logan Middle School. James says all candidates will speak so it could be a long evening.
