Bringing seniors and legislators together

Legislative Listening Day is Saturday in Logan. AARP Utah and Cache County are bringing citizens together with their local legislators from 11 a.m.-noon in the Cache County Courthouse, 199 North Main. “It’s an opportunity for anyone to connect and ask questions of their elected officials,” said Tom Hogan, AARP Utah Area Coordinator. “We’ve found that trying to get hold of our delegation during the legislative session is difficult, they’re really busy doing important work. They have agreed to set aside an hour during the session to answer questions. This Saturday we’re focusing the conversation on senior issues. “It’s a chance to have a conversation with your representative and voice your concerns,” said Hogan. AARP has encouraged the legislature to focus on Meals on Wheels funding, retirement security, state health care issues, protection of state benefits and any other services that might be senior-focused. Hogan is the former director of the Cache Senior Citizen Center and has been interested in the proposal to build a new senior citizen center in addition to more than 200 apartments for seniors. “The concept is a sound concept,” said Hogan. “It does a lot of important things. It keeps folks living in the downtown core. It provides services where folks are living. Now, how we all make that all work out, that’s a whole different process.” Hogan said that while Saturday’s meeting will focus on seniors’ issues, everyone is invited to attend.
