Bill urges Utah companies to look at canal hazards

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Utah lawmakers are considering a bill that would urge water companies to create management plans identifying possible hazards in canals or ditches but would make the plans secret.Rep. Fred Hunsaker, a Logan Republican, says voluntarily complying with proposed law would give water companies access to state funds. Noncompliance would cut them off from state money for repairs and hazard prevention.House Bill 60 would make the management plans exempt from the state’s open-records law, including in the case of lawsuits filed in canal failures.Last summer a mudslide killed a mother and her two children in their Logan home. The Logan Northern Canal broke in the slide, prompting discussions about how to manage the waterways.A House committee on Wednesday held the bill for further study.
