There are signs on the road reading “Hyde Park Commons” but new Hyde Park Mayor Bryan Cox says those signs are premature. Cox says the proposed project, that includes about 100 three story condominiums with retail shops on the bottom and office space on the top, is not allowed right now in Hyde Park.”The city council first has to address those type of issues, the type of zoning for a multi-family housing and the zoning for a mixed use, which means using residential and business occupying the same zone,” Cox says. “So those are the things the city needs to address, the city council, and determine whether or not that fits the character of Hyde Park.”On KVNU’s Crosstalk show Tuesday Cox said he hopes the council will move forward because the developers need to know whether or not they approve the project. He says some councilmembers and residents have said it does not fit the character of Hyde Park.”I’d be more in line with a lot of the citizens,” Cox says. “I’m encouraged to try and get businesses that will be successful in Hyde Park. “But on the other hand a three story condo is really out of place within the bounds of Hyde Park.”Cox says under Hyde Park’s form of government the mayor votes only in case of a tie. He says, hopefully, the issue will be resolved soon.
