Richard Hansen, veteran Blue Sox coach, dies of heart attack

Richard Hansen, a man referred to by many as “Mr. Baseball”, died Thursday at his home in Amalga of a heart attack. He was 79 years old and he had coached the Smithfield Blue Sox baseball team over the last 47 years.Former Smithfield Aztec Coach Vic Bingham, who was asked to take over the Blue Sox for the coming season, says Hansen’s shoes will be difficult to fill. According to an article in the Herald Journal, Bingham says Hansen has left a legacy for other coaches and provided thousands of people a place to play the game. Hansen has managed more than 2500 games and baseball lovers say he was highly respected and will be greatly missed.
