Preston teen killed in go cart crash, adult man held on manslaughter charges

A Preston teenager died Monday as a result of injuries sustained in a go cart crash in Franklin County. Andy Zapolski, 13, was riding go karts with 39-year-old John Kautz, his mother’s boyfriend, Preston Police Chief Val Sparrow said Tuesday. Kautz reportedly had been drinking and crashed into the back of Zapolski’s go kart, causing injuries that Zapolski later died from. Kautz is now being charged with vehicular manslaughter. “Initially we were looking at an aggravated DUI, so he was over the legal limit,” Sparrow said. “He was well over the limit.” Sparrow declined to say how far over the legal alcohol limit Kautz was as determined by an alcohol breath test. Zapolski reportedly was not wearing a helmet or using a seat belt at the time of the crash. He died in a Salt Lake City hospital Monday evening. Kautz, meanwhile, is being held in jail on $100,000 bond, though Sparrow said a judge may increase that as a result of the manslaughter charge. Kautz is being held in the Caribou County Jail.
