Stangs stomp cats

For the second week in a row, the Mountain Crest Mustangs dominated a valley rival in a highly anticipated game as they beat Sky View 38-17. After beating Logan last week by 21 points, MC won their third straight outright region title by the same margin.”Playing a valley rival for a region championship, that’s what gets people excited,” MC head coach Mark Wootton said after the game. “We’re glad that this Sky View program has played well these last couple years. They’ve been right there with us.”In a mistake-filled game that featured over 20 penalties and five turnovers, the Mustangs were able to pick up a win due to their ability to convert turnovers into scores. Mountain Crest had 10 of their points come off of two interceptions by Bobcat quarterback Kyler Carlsen; in comparison, Sky View had three takeaways, but were not able to turn any of these opportunities into points.Sky View got off to an early lead, as Carlsen found the end zone on a 38 yard touchdown run. After MC pulled themselves within one point on a 34 yard TD pass from Alex Kuresa to Tyler Weese, the hosts answered with a drive deep into Mustang territory before settling for a short field goal to go up 10-6. From then on, it was all Mustangs. The MC defense shut down the Sky View attack, and the offense was able to reel off 36 unanswered points, due to large plays on both sides of the ball. Mountain Crest running back Alex Knowles had consecutive touchdown receptions of 32 and 80 yards, to help the Mustangs go into halftime with a 22-10 lead.”He (Knowles) is a great football player,” said Wootton. After the halftime intermission, three big consecutive plays ended with a Mustang touchdown. Mountain Crest returned the Sky View kick to the 25, and picked up a first down before their drive stalled near midfield. Alex Kuresa saved the possesion when he scooped up a bouncing snap on an attempted punt and gained 50 yards to put the ball inside the SV five yard line. On the following play, Kuresa fumbled the ball on a quarterback keeper. It appeared as if MC had lost their momentum, until Malin Brough intercepted a Carlsen pass on the next play and returned it 10 yards to paydirt to put the Mustangs ahead 28-10. MC then turned to their running game to eat up clock, as Knowles scored a two yard TD on the ground, and Justin Call kicked a field goal to cap time consuming drives. The Bobcats then scored on a five yard run well after the game had been decided to achieve the final score. Both teams will now turn their attention to the playoffs, as first round play begins next week. Mountain Crest will have a home game as the number one seed from Region 5, and Sky View will be on the road as the third seed.
