USU volleyball nets win against Weber

OGDEN, Utah – Sophomore Liz McArthur recorded a career-high 17 kills to lead Utah State to a four-set win against Weber State (25-14, 21-25, 25-20, 25-14) during the first day of competition at the Best Western Canyon Pines Weber State Invitational held here Friday night.Utah State, who improves to 31-19 all-time against the Wildcats, has now won 10 of its last 11 matches against WSU including seven straight on the road. USU also recorded a win in its season-opening match for the first time in three years.McArthur, a sophomore outside hitter from St. George, Utah (Snow Canyon HS), hit a career-high .255 (17-5-47) in the match. Junior outside hitter Lori Wilson-Beckstrom (Provo, Utah/Provo HS) also had a solid match for USU as she recorded a career-high nine kills and hit .200 (9-5-20). Junior middle blocker Katie Astle (Sandy, Utah/Skyline HS) hit .333 (5-1-12) on the night and added three block assists, while fellow junior middle blocker Shantell Durrant (American Fork, Utah/American Fork HS) had six kills, four block assists and four digs.Utah State also received solid matches from junior setter Chelsea Fowles (Hollister, Calif./San Benito HS) who had a match-high 43 assists and junior libero Christine Morrill (Neola, Utah/Union HS) who had a match-high 16 digs.Weber State was led by senior outside hitter Chelsea Bair who had nine kills, nine digs and three block assists for the Wildcats.Utah State took control of the match early on as it scored the first seven points of the match and hit .500 (16-1-30) in the opening set as it coasted to the 11-point win. Weber State rebounded to win the second set, 25-21, despite hitting .000 (6-6-30) as USU hit negative .132 (9-14-38). USU regrouped and won the third set by five points (25-20) as it hit .267 (10-2-30) as compared to a .167 (16-9-42) hitting percentage for WSU. In the fourth and final set, USU hit .286 (13-5-28) and limited the Wildcats to a negative .071 (6-8-28) hitting percentage.Utah State finished the match by hitting .206 (48-22-126) and limited Weber State to a .056 (35-28-125) hitting percentage. USU also registered 12 more digs (53-41) and three more team blocks (9-6) in the match. Both teams finished with five service aces, while the Wildcats had four more service errors (13-9).Utah State will continue play in the Western Canyon Pines Weber State Invitational on Saturday as it faces Gonzaga at 11 a.m., and Utah Valley at 5 p.m.
