Box Elder proposes new drug testing policy

The Box Elder School District is considering an expanded drug testing policy. Under the plan, random drug testing would be allowed for all students who participate in activities within the Utah High School Activities Association and those who perform or compete in community events on behalf of the school. In expressing support for the policy, board member Jim Fuller said it is a misnomer that athletes are the only students using drugs. If the policy is approved, it will be administered by the Bear River Health Department and will include observed sampling. Box Elder High School Assistant Principal Sharon Brown said the intent of the drug testing is not to be punitive but rather to provide help to a student who gets in trouble at a young age.
